Second Design is
the core of Design2Cost.
In product development,
time pressure and
uncertainties regarding
environment and
specifications often
result in technical "cushions"
which drive up material
and manufacturing cost.
Significant cost
reductions can be achieved,
if the product undergoes a
Second Design exercise.
This was the result of an
analysis published in Automobil-Produktion
(02/2009) which ecs
Beratung & Service
carried through on a number
of Design to Cost projects. The
cost reduction effects are impressive:
on average there were 29.8% reductions.
90% of the projects had a cost
reduction of more than 15%, about half
of the projects had cost reductions of
more than 30%.
The article in
Automobil-Produktion describes how it
is possible to achieve such high
savings - without impairing
functionality - by means of Second
Design. In particular, conclusions
regarding the development process are
made.
It is the character of optimisation
that it goes to the limit of
feasibiiity exploiting all reserves.
This has to be the ambition. To meet
this ambition means that there has to
be a First Design in order to control
the basic requirements and development
risks. Only in the Second Design it is
tecnically possible to tackle the
limits of feasibility in a stringent
way.
